What is somatic psychotherapy?

Somatic psychotherapy is a body-centered therapy that incorporates our whole being - our mind, emotions, body and spirit.  It weaves together talk therapy along with body awareness, gentle breath work and intentional movements to allow a deeper connection with our inner experience and wisdom.

In a typical session, we begin with grounding and setting our intention for our time together. Grounding  is our ability to be present in the here and now.  A simple grounding practice might be pressing our feet into the floor beneath us and noticing what's around us.  During our session we may invite some gentle breathing practices and intentional movements to help contact our deeper experiences or to release any stress in the body.  You will always have choice in how much or how little you wish to participate in these practices.

Over time, we can learn to develop an awareness of our body's messages while safely exploring our thoughts, feelings and emotions.  Many of our present day concerns can have their roots in our distant past. Often, previous traumatic or overwhelming experiences can remain trapped in our body for decades and become reactivated during present times of stress.

We will explore your natural inner resources - the strengths, gifts and resilience you already have inside you - to help create an inner place of safety and stability that is there for you when you need it.   We can offer optional tools you can practice outside of the therapy space to help you navigate nervous system states with more ease, understanding and compassion.  These are tools for life.

While one session can help bring some insight, it is generally not enough to create lasting change, particularly when working with long-standing issues.  Change and growth can require an ongoing commitment to ourselves and our healing process at a pace that is right for each individual.
